On today’s #FridayFieldTrip, usfws is taking you to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, home of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Originally established in 1933 as a sanctuary for migratory birds, the refuge hosts a spectacular amount of plant and animal diversity across its forest and wetland habitats, including one of the highest concentrations of bald eagles on the East Coast. Beneath the refuge soil there are also deep historic roots that may help us piece together previously untold stories. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge preserves the landscapes once familiar to Harriet Tubman, the famous abolitionist and champion of the Underground Railroad. It was on these lands, two centuries ago, where Tubman grew up, escaped slavery, and would eventually return to free others. By conserving these habitats, we also help to ensure that these cultural stories are not forgotten. Check out our stories throughout the day to learn more about the refuge, its rich history and cultural connect...
