January marks the anniversary of when James Marshall found gold in 1848 at Sutter’s Mill 40 miles east of present-day Sacramento. This would lead to the California Gold Rush and Sacramento grew as the closest major city to the gold fields.
For today, Alex letterpress printed a halftone copy of a lithograph that illustrated Sacramento at the time of the Gold Rush. This print depicts J Street between 5th and 6th Streets in 1854. This was printed with black ink using our Washington hand press.
