Bolton Wanderers’ 4-0 drubbing of Plymouth Argyle was the highest attended fixture in Europe this weekend with 79,389 fans watching the two League One sides battle it out in the Papa Johns Trophy final – more than four times the amount the players are used to.
Both sets of fans made the long trip to Wembley Stadium from opposite sides of the country for their sides’ special day but there was only one set celebrating by the time the final whistle blew.
Bolton took command of the game early on when Kyle Dempsey and Dion Charles both netted in the opening ten minutes. Second-half goals from Elias Kachunga and Gethin Jones then helped to guarantee Wanderers’ win and gave fans a day to remember, some for better reasons than others. (📸Tom Dulat/Getty Images)
