Kenya’s youthquake is driving up unemployment rates—largely due to skills gaps. And the situation is particularly precarious in rural regions. So nonprofit Learning Lions is going straight to the source, building a sleek new information and communications technology campus in Kenya’s Turkana County.
Designed to act as an incubator for change, the 1,416 square-meter (15,242 square-foot) school provides free technical training, networking, and housing so that young entrepreneurs can “live a life full of (digital) opportunity, right from their home regions.”
That focus on the local community was a throughline of the project. The ultra-sustainable campus was designed by kerearchitecture as a tribute to the school’s surroundings. Terracotta-colored buildings seamlessly blend with the surrounding desert, with a trio of towers that take their cue from termite colonies.
