They've been scuttling alongside us in the shadows for millennia. They've changed the course of our history and we have changed theirs. They've adapted to and exploited humans, making them one of the most successful creatures on the planet. And we have exploited them in return. A few years ago I traveled all over the world covering the tale of rats for natgeo, but most interesting was learning how rats live in New York City just below the sidewalk—while the world goes on oblivious to them, inches away.
