Edwin Diaz’s injury rocked the baseball world. But how does it rock the Mets’ chances at a title? When the Mets signed 29-year-old closer Edwin Diaz to a five-year 102-million-dollar deal, it seemed that winning the World Series was almost a given. Now with Diaz suffering a full patella tear during the WBC and missing the 2023 season, the Mets’ title quest is in doubt. Diaz put up historic numbers last year. He had 32 saves in 61 appearances with a 1.31 ERA. With Diaz’s powerhouse arm, the Mets will be forced to either trade for a closer, like Zack Britton or lean on their pitching roster. Mets’ pitcher Adam Ottavino or All-Star David Robertson will most likely replace him.
