Electric bicycles are taking to Iowa's trails, helping cyclists get over steep hills and slice through the wind with ease. These e-bikes are allowed to roam alongside human-powered bikes on roadways, bike lanes, bike paths and other multi-use paths. They can help cyclists who need an extra boost while on the trail. They are allowed on major trails like the High Trestle Trail and the Raccoon River Valley Trail, so long as they follow standard trail etiquette and yield to pedestrians. E-bikes are even allowed to participate in RAGBRAI. While e-bikes and other electric devices, like e-scooters, have their benefits, they also pose safety risks and their popularity has led to concerns about regulations, like speed limits, in Iowa.
