For days, President Trump threatened to punish several European nations with tariffs if they did not relent to his demands that the U.S. acquire Greenland. The threats sent stock markets plunging and prompted European leaders to convene emergency meetings. Then Trump drew back, saying he had reached “the framework of a future deal” for Greenland and the Arctic, without offering details. It is unclear if any agreements will ultimately be reached about the future of the island, a semiautonomous Danish territory. But Andrew Ross Sorkin explained how leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos remained on edge after Trump, for now, backed down from threats of using tariffs or military force to gain Greenland.
