🚨 BREAKING: Open Enrollment could be coming to Virginia high school sports 🚨 Right now, where a student lives can determine whether they’re allowed to play — even if they’re fully enrolled at a school. Lawmakers say that system has sidelined athletes unfairly. A new proposal, Senate Bill 220, would require eligibility to be based on school enrollment, not residency. The push comes after a former Varina High School athlete was benched due to a residency dispute — despite remaining enrolled — and later transferred to a private school. If passed, any student enrolled in a public high school could play sports there, regardless of where they live.
