#DYK: Freshwater mussels have ingenious ways of reproducing. ✨For example: After attracting fish through a tantalizing lure, they expel their larvae onto the fishes’ gills to be incubated. But the fun isn’t over yet! As if mussels weren’t cool enough, researchers just discovered a clever new tactic some mussels use to find fishy hosts for their offspring — captured by this video. Here’s how it works 👉 An endangered thick-shelled river mussel climbs up a streambank, leaving part of her body poking out of the water. Then she spurts larva-infused jets into the air and down onto the water’s surface.
