“I started losing my eyesight because of a disease called Coats syndrome. My mom had already died of cancer, so when doctors sent me to an oncologist, I thought I was going to die too. I was extremely scared, and I didn’t feel confident anymore. After that, I decided I had to challenge myself and try things I thought I couldn’t. My friend told me to start rollerblading, and I said no, I only had one eye. But when I finally tried it, something shifted. Most of the people in these photos are the people I skate with in Medellín. I met them in random places: under bridges, in the street, at skate parks. People judge those kinds of friendships, but they became my family. There’s magic in being resilient here. We take bad things and turn them into art. We support each other. And somehow, that makes life feel really beautiful.”
