Was there ever a proper name for that neo-jazz pop moment in the early 00s? Probably not. It sort of hovered between scenes. Too pop for the jazz purists and too jazz for the pop kids- but it was definitely a thing. And then Amy Winehouse arrived and blew the whole idea of “scene” apart. She wasn’t part of a movement, she was the movement. From Frank onwards she rewired pop culture. With her voice, style and identity. The way she made these genres feel dangerous and modern again. Alongside that moment sat Jamie Cullum, who I still think is wildly underrated. His discography is genuinely solid, but I’ll always have a soft spot for his pop covers. Taking massive songs and bending them through piano, swing and charm without turning them into novelty. His Radio 2 session cover of Feel by Robbie is obviously a fav.
