The goal in sports photography tends to be shooting for 1) action/intensity 2) faces 3) ball (or whatever object is being used in the sport). Shoot tight, crop tighter. Of course all rules are meant to be broken, but sometimes the rest of the scene tells a bigger story. The first slide is the crop - typical of what you’d expect shooting a basketball game. But it doesn’t tell the rest of the story. This is a breakaway at the end of the game with just seconds left. The Cougars were rallying for a comeback at the end of a close game. Slide two is the full photo. Slide three shows what is missed with the crop - 1) the reflection of the seconds left (also shows half the score - the full score would have been even better) 2) the animated coach of the other team 3) shocked “oh no” reactions from the bench 4) reflection of the host team 5) cool reflection of the player on the court 6) players trying to catch up with the breakaway.
