I've tried to post an update video 3 times. Hopefully everyone is at home because this storm is no joke! Storm totals are rising and snow totals are already out pacing more moderate predictions. It looks like the cold from this storm system is really drying out the snow. When forecasting snow totals we look at something called a “snow ratio” this tells us how much snow can be produced from the same amount of water in different conditions. The standard in forecasting is 10:1, for every 1 inch of water available the storm produces 10 inches of snow. Warmer temps can drop that down to 8:1 and give you wet heavy snow. Really cold temps aloft can raise it to 20:1. It looks like this storm has produced snow ratios over 10:1 and closer to 20:1. The system is expected to keep going through tonight and will likely take several days to clean up from in the metro. Franklin county is under a level three snow emergency, do not leave the house in this. I'll try again to get some updates going...
