During his State of the City Address, Hoover Mayor Nick Derzis said he’s prioritizing economic development by revitalizing Riverchase Galleria and Patton Creek.
Derzis said he remembered when the Galleria was the largest attraction in the area, constantly bustling with business. In recent years, however, traffic has slowed.
Sears has been vacant since 2019 and Macy’s was listed for sale in August 2024. Visitation has plummeted 33% since 2019. Sales tax revenue has fallen 41% since 2007.
Derzis said the Galleria is costing the city $9 million a year in revenue because of its condition. He said the city has “had discussions” with stakeholders to return the Galleria and Patton Creek to their former glory.
