Brandon Rowell, 46, has spent $11,000 trying to free his husband, Ronald, from immigrant detention since last month.
On Dec. 5, the Gadsden couple reported to a check-in on Ronald’s asylum case. Shortly after going inside, Ronald was put into the back of a truck in handcuffs.
Ronald, 32, is in detention in Louisiana awaiting a 2027 hearing on his asylum claim. He fled Guatemala in 2023, because he was targeted as a gay man and feared for his life, said Rowell.
Rowell works remotely as a manager at a call center and cares for his mother. Despite his pain from multiple back surgeries, he is working weekends delivering for Door Dash.
Between commissary food and the phone calls, Rowell is spending $1,000 a month on his husband’s detention on top of paying an attorney $10,000. He has thought about using his house for funds.
