Sophia Smith. Fenomena. No longer the Future of the sport—she is the Now. It seems like her rise to the top of U.S. pro soccer has been at warp speed, but it's really just perfect timing. Stanford Star, First Teenager to be selected in the NWSL Draft, and now a mainstay in the U.S. women's national team. It all just makes sense.
In a year in which she was the leading scorer for the U.S. Women’s National Team and Portland Thorns FC, won the National Women’s Soccer League Most Valuable Player and was named MVP of the NWSL Championship Game, forward Sophia Smith was voted the 2022 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.
Defenders fear her running at them, one v one's, it's a long day. Don't let her play in space, a headache incoming trying to mark her. We'll keep watching Sophia excel at the highest level, but we definitely won't have to wait. Like we said, her time is now.
