The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27th, the day of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945 by Soviet forces during the Second World War, to serve as Holocaust Remembrance Day. The day commemorates the victims of the Nazi regime and promotes Holocaust education. For much of the population in the United States, the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and other concentration camps was not widely known until April 1945. In an article below the fold on the front page of The Sacramento Bee published on April 11, 1945, Thoburn Wiant wrote a story about Dr. Bela Fabian, a Hungarian Jewish leader and survivor at Auschwitz.
