In Focus: Raqib Shaw at Art SG
Raqib Shaw’s tapestry, ‘The Pragmatic Pessimist’ (2024) is featured in the TVS Initiative for Indian and South Asian Contemporary Art at Art SG, which places a robust spotlight on contemporary art practices from India and South Asia.
‘The Pragmatic Pessimist’ (2024) captures all the meticulous detailing of Raqib’s enamel paintings, translating his unique vision in a 4m wide Jacquard tapestry.
From the artist's ‘Space Between Dreams’ series, ‘The Pragmatic Pessimist’ (2024) reflects on the precarity of the planet in a tableau which the artist describes as ’an inner landscape where memory, psyche and commentary on the world outside, interlace’.
Along with ‘The Perseverant Prophet’ (2024), the tapestry is on view at the The Huntington Library, Art Museum, where both were first featured as part of 'Raqib Shaw: Ballads of East and West' (November 2024 – March 2025).
