Odessa A’zion has officially stepped away from starring in ‘Deep Cuts’ after fans dragged the casting.
She was set to play Zoe, a character who’s Mexican and Jewish, despite not being Mexican herself. Once the backlash hit, she didn’t hedge or hide behind PR speak, she said ‘I’m OUT.” 💅
“Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. F**k that. I’m OUT,” she shared to her IG stories.
She said she auditioned for Percy, admitted she hadn’t read the book before saying yes to Zoe, and owned that mistake, saying she “should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting.”
And instead of letting the role be rewritten to fit her, she shut that down too. “I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them.”
