I know it’s hard. Scary.
Liam in his little blue hat. The gassing and pepper spraying of people who are still and complying. The deaths of Fouad, Nenko, Geraldo, Keith, and Renee. The murder of Alex, a nurse, who was disarmed and restrained before they shot him in the back for exercising his right to record and trying to protect a woman. Because he showed he was what most of us actually think a real man is. One who uses his power to help others, not harm. Who was working on scientific research to help prevent a very common infection in hospitals.
They want us to give up. They want us to hate and fear.
But if we have been listening to those who are Indigenous, Black, Brown, relatives of Japanese Americans who were interned, and those who have always experienced anti-immigrant hate; then we don’t need to say, “This isn’t who we are.”
Because unfortunately, it is.
I just don’t think it *has to be* who we are.
And I don’t think it’s too late to course correct.
