As my father said, we all have a human side. Even in darkness, we can help the worst people find the light and recognize the humanity that resides in us all.
I am frequently haunted by this story and the fact that I exist, that my children exist, and that my father kept existing because of an unkind man who decided to show a modicum of kindness. But it also encourages and reminds me that our role in this world is to discover that humanity in ourselves and in others, and to stop what happened to my father from ever happening again to any human being. That is what we need to remember and practice on this International Holocaust Remembrance Day and every day.
You can watch my father’s entire recount of his time in the Holocaust on YouTube by searching “Roman Lubetzky Holocaust Interview,” or by following the link in my bio.
