Getting your bearings in low Earth orbit
You're looking at the Fluid Particles experiment aboard the International Space Station. Inside the ISS's Microgravity Science Glovebox, a container is filled with viscous fluid and ball bearings, then subjected to oscillating frequencies to see how the bearings move around and group together. (You can get a better look at the Microgravity Science Glovebox in the second photo.)
The results from this experiment could help us understand how to contain harmful dust on the Moon and learn how microplastics stick together in the oceans. At any given time, the space station is running a number of different experiments, getting us ready to explore the Moon and Mars—while developing new technologies, medicines, and materials to make life better back on Earth.
