This is this morning in Winter Haven Florida. I know, shocking. But what an interesting day to be a farmer in (mostly) sunny Central Fl. Prepared for storms and hurricanes alike, but never quite ready for anything to drop below freezing in a state that reaches 100 degrees in March. I went to Whitehead Farms and UPick to check in on how they prepare for this, the first answer? No sleep. The second answer? Freeze before they freeze. So… this is freeze protection at Whitehead. Applying water on their blueberries to protect them. When the water freezes it creates a bulb, releasing heat (or exothermic reaction) which helps these crops from dropping to below freezing temps. The fear? That ice combined with Floridas surprise cold and wind weighing down these crops to where they break off, and now only time will tell. All to say… thank your local farmers today, and pet your nearest lucky farm cat, they need as much as they can get.
