In a ground-floor unit of an apartment complex in Georgetown, Ohio, a young family is rebuilding with grit and gratitude.
Ash Harriger cuddles on a couch beside her daughter, 8-year-old Laraina. The two trade jokes and giggles, correcting each other’s stories and talking about school and movies. Their bond is unmistakable. So is the determination of this single mother in her late 20s to make life brighter for her child.
Ash moved to the village of Georgetown in September 2022 after a challenging stretch of instability. A separation from her daughter’s father meant months of moving between family and friends’ homes, trying to find a place that felt safe and steady. When Laraina’s grandmother told them about an apartment near her in rural Brown County, Ash jumped at the chance to start again.
“I didn’t really have much when we moved here,” she said. “Everything that I have in my apartment, I’ve thrifted.”
