When Charlie and Veeta White talk about their son Christopher, their faces light up with the kind of pride only a parent can know. Christopher, 36, lives with a combination of complex medical challenges – spina bifida and Chiari malformation among them. What shines through in every story they tell is not what he can’t do but how deeply he loves, learns and connects.
“Christopher’s very much a people person like me,” Charlie said with a grin. “When he goes to church, everybody there talks to him and they’re asking when he’s coming back.”
Charlie and Veeta have been Christopher’s constant caregivers since birth. They say it involves love, advocacy and a lot of hard work. Officially, Charlie became his son’s direct support professional about six years ago when he took a job with Batesville, Indiana-based New Horizons Rehabilitation, the agency that nominated his family for the Wish List.
