It's #WorldWetlandsDay. Wetlands are among the most important ecosystems on Earth. They regulate water flows, store carbon, sustain biodiversity, and protect communities from floods and droughts. Yet they are under-valued and under threat. This year’s theme — “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage” — highlights the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in safeguarding wetlands through knowledge systems rooted in observation, stewardship, and deep respect for nature. At the World Meteorological Organization, we recognize the importance of combining the best of science with the wisdom of traditional knowledge. Community-level expertise and experience strengthen hydrological monitoring, improve early warning systems, and enhance our understanding of climate impacts. Join us in protecting wetlands!
