More than half a million registered Iowa voters have been moved to "inactive" status as part of Iowa's regular voter roll maintenance, although the designation won't immediately affect their ability to vote.
A Republican-backed change to state election law signed by Gov. KimReynoldsIA in 2021 requires registered voters to be marked as inactive if they fail to vote in the most recent general election. Previously, voters were marked inactive if they failed to vote in two consecutive general elections.
When they go to vote, their experience will be the same as that of active voters. But it is the first step toward eventually losing their voting status.
