Celebrating Black history, we honor a trailblazer whose perseverance broke barriers and carved a path for people like Tiger Woods. In April 1975, Lee Elder made history as the first Black golfer to play in the Masters. At the time, Augusta National had an all-white tournament until Elder got an invitation after winning the Monsanto Open the previous year. Months before he died, Masters officials granted Elder the honor of hitting a ceremonial opening tee shot alongside Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. While Elder was not well enough to take a swing, he took a moment to to acknowledge the resounding cheers of the gallery.
