Although music runs through my ancestry as blood runs through my veins, it was not a path that I was fully supported in from a young age. My father came to the UK with dreams of becoming a doctor - and he set his sights on a similar vision for my future. He urged me onto a path that had me studying Law at college, often saying to us when we were younger - “music is for beggars”. Despite his best efforts, my feet still found the path that was mine to walk - the path of a musician. It was only after I’d been walking this path for many years, after coming to see me play at Wembley Stadium with Jamiroquai in 1997 did he begin to see me for who I truly was. A child of his mother’s people. A drummer. A dancer. A performer. Not as an action carried out but as a way of life. When music calls to you, rare are those who are completely immune to its call.
