Did you know that scientists at Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology in Dubendorf, Switzerland, have created a 3D-printed battery powered by fungal cells? These cells are mixed into the printing ink, which is based on cellulose. The battery is completely biodegradable. ⁠ ⁠ While the living cells don’t produce a whole lot of electricity, they are enough to power a temperature sensor for several days. This could be a great innovation for supplying power to sensors for agriculture or research in remote regions. After it’s done its job, the battery digests itself from the inside.
