As the cold season approaches in many parts of the country, we’re thinking about how we can bring a little bit of color indoors. We wanted to share this timeline from our September/October issue so you can follow along with your winter blooms! ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ Here are some tips to help you force impressive blooms this winter: ⁠ ⁠ 🔍️ Start looking for your bulbs around August/September. Catalogs are a great place to source bulbs, but you can also check your local nurseries. ⁠ ⁠ 🪴 Are your bulbs prechilled? You can pot these immediately and store them in a cool spot (around 40°F). ⁠ ⁠ ❄️ Not prechilled? Start chilling as soon as they arrive. Many bulbs need a vernalization period—this will mimic winter and prevent premature sprouting. ⁠ ⁠ 🐿️ Prevent critter damage by topping outdoor pots with stones or chicken wire. ⁠ ⁠ 🪻 Pack in your bulbs tightly.
