Pumpkin plot twist (the true kind đ):â
Jack-oâ-lanterns are pumpkinsâusually varieties of Cucurbita pepo. But âpumpkinâ isnât just one species. It can get confusing... especially when you start thinking about holiday baking and what is really in that pumpkin can? â
â
Often it is Cucurbita moschata (think Dickinson types) - a squash more closely related to zucchini - great pies can also come from C. maxima and C. pepo. Pro tip: butternut (C. moschata) makes an excellent pie filling.â
â
Whatever confusion you may have had about the Cucurbita family, youâll have all your squash in a row after reading our latest Growerâs Almanac entry.â
â
In our Sept/Oct issue, matt_mattus untangles the squash family tree so your carving and baking choices actually match the botany.â
