The new issue (July/August 2025) of American Gardener has officially landed—and it’s twirling into summer with a spark.
This crazy plant caught our eye at one of the new gardens in our network and I had to make it a cover star.
With its delicate, frilled blooms that unfurl like miniature fireworks, snake gourd (Trichosanthes cucumerina) feels right at home in a July garden. Its curling, edible fruits live up to the name—slithering (shockingly snake-like) through foliage in ways that surprise and delight.
✨ Unexpected beauty.
🌀 Edible intrigue.
🌱 A reminder that joy in the garden often arrives in strange, spectacular forms.
📬 AHS members, check your mailbox - these fireworks should arrive sometime in the next 2 weeks, around the 4th of July.
