Human Development & Family Studies alum Kaitlyn Brickl ’25 is a child life specialist at Mayo Clinic Children’s in Rochester, Minnesota. In her role, Brickl supports and prepares children for medical situations they find scary or stressful. At its core, the child life profession strives to make healthcare experiences positive. "It is gratifying to assist children in creating a positive medical experience where they receive the procedures and treatments they need to grow and thrive into adulthood," Brickl says. The School of Human Ecology now offers a Child Development option within the Human Development & Family Studies major, focused on the study of human development and relationships from birth to adolescence. The Child Development curriculum prepares alums like Brickl for careers related to the health and well-being of children and their families, including healthcare, mental health, family support services, public policy and family law.
