Understanding your hip flexors 🧰
The “hip flexor” isn’t just one muscle….it’s a group of muscles (iliopsoas, rectus femoris, TFL, sartorius) that work together to lift and control the thigh. When people say their hip flexors feel “tight,” it’s often not because they’re short, but because they’re overworked, under-supported, and weak through full range, especially from long hours of sitting and poor glute/core contribution. Weak hip flexors can also pull the pelvis into an anterior tilt, forcing the lower back to compensate and creating that constant tight or stiff feeling in the lumbar region.
That’s why strengthening usually beats stretching. Stretching a muscle that’s already long and unstable can trigger the nervous system to tighten it back up for protection. Building strength and control through full range teaches the brain the position is safe, improves load-sharing with the glutes and core, and reduces both hip and low-back tightness. In short: tight doesn’t always mean shor...
