Many practitioners believe that the stronger the pressure, the deeper the effect. In reality, the tissues inside the oral cavity, especially around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), are highly sensitive and often already inflamed when clients come in with discomfort, tension, or jaw pain. When additional force is applied to an already irritated area, it can aggravate inflammation instead of resolving it. Inflamed tissue becomes reactive and begins to protect itself. Shortly after inflammation, the body may form fibrosis a buildup of dense, less elastic connective tissue. Fibrosis reduces circulation and restricts mobility, creating a sense of stiffness and heaviness instead of lift.
