#OnThisDay in 1909, late sax player and bandleader Harold Dejan was born in New Orleans! He was born into a Creole family and became a professional musician in his teens — joining the Olympia Serenaders and then the Holy Ghost Brass Band. He played regularly in Storyville, at Mahogany Hall, and on Mississippi riverboats. He also worked in the mail office of the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company for 23 years, and, in World War II, played in Navy bands. Dejan reformed and led the Olympia Brass Band (originally formed in the 1880's) in the 1950's, and also founded the the Young Olympians (who's members went on to form the Soul Rebels), a brass band featuring young players, to ensure the band's message and tradition carried on. 📸: Sydney Byrd #BlackHistoryMonth #JazzMuseum #NewOrleans
