Previously, Black History Month was only celebrated on the second week of February. Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Week, chose this week as it coincided with the birthdays of two key figures in Black History; Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Woodson founded Black History Week to recognize the contributions of Black and African Americans. Overtime, this celebration expanded, and in 1976, it officially became a month long observance in the United States.
