The U.S. Department of Education is delaying wage garnishment for defaulted student loans. The decision follows a year of sweeping changes to financial aid, including loan caps and the termination of aid programs. The Education Department is changing how student loans are repaid and the delay “will give defaulted borrowers additional time to evaluate these new repayment options,” the department said in a statement. The department said involuntary collection efforts “will function more efficiently and fairly after the Trump Administration implements significant improvements to our broken student loan system.” New repayment plans will be available starting July 1. Borrowers can waive unpaid interest for on-time payments.
