In a recent blog post, Irondale Mayor James Stewart said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations “tear families apart in Irondale,” and that something must be done. Stewart, who is the first Black mayor of Irondale, said the federal immigration crackdown has similar effects on community members as racially discriminatory policies has had on Black communities. “If you don’t understand history, history will end up repeating itself,” Stewart said. “We have a responsibility to deal with things that are being done wrong in our community, regardless of who it’s affecting.” Stewart said the city of Irondale will not assist ICE with raids and added that all residents, no matter their immigration status, have access to public safety services. “We’re going to be just, right and fair.
