Exciting right whale news! 🐋 The 21st right whale calf of the season has been reported after a public sighting off Daytona Beach, Florida! This is the first time in 15 years that more than 20 calves have been documented in a season. There are less that 400 right whales remaining in the wild, including approximately 70 reproductively active females. Experts from noaafisheries estimate that with the current number of females and the necessary time to rest between births, 20 newborn calves would be considered a relatively productive year for the critically endangered right whales. Slalom (right whale catalog #1245) and her new calf were first sighted by beachgoers and members of the Florida-based right whale volunteer sighting network, the marinelandrightwhaleproject on January 22 and then again on January 24.
