The Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute aerial survey team located another new North Atlantic right whale calf! Callosity Back (catalog #3760) and her calf were sighted east of Debidue Beach, SC on December 4, 2025. This is the third aerial sighting of a mom and calf right whale pair in the Southeast US for the season. According to the North Atlantic Right Whale Catalog, curated by the New England Aquarium, this is 18-year-old Callosity Back's first documented calf! Callosity Back was named because she is uniquely the only right whale known to have callosity (rough patches of skin that are typically only on the head) on her back. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission aerial survey team sighted the 2nd calf of the season earlier this week on December 3, 2025, with their mom, Millipede (catalog #3520) east of the Florida/Georgia border.
