Not only are these manatees adorable, but they are also a keystone species, giving researchers vital insight on the conditions of the aquatic ecosystems in which they live. If the manatees are thriving, chances are, the ecosystem is too. These particular manatee patients range from 600-750 pounds! While adult manatees average around 1000 pounds, some manatees have even been recorded as large as 3,500 lbs. Although large, these animals are very docile, and have no natural predators. In fact, humans are the worst threat to these beautiful manatees in the wild. Boat strikes, pollution, and habitat loss are all detrimental to the species.
