Dr. Artis Davenport built one of the most remarkable coaching legacies in collegiate track and field history. Over 42 years, he won seven national championships and three national runner up finishes, coached 40 individual national champions and 178 All Americans, all with limited scholarships, volunteer assistants, and minimal resources. A founder of the athletic program at Southern University at New Orleans, Dr. Davenport led both the men’s and women’s track and field teams. Under his leadership, SUNO won three NCAA Division III men’s outdoor national titles from 1975–77 and four NAIA Division I women’s indoor and outdoor national championships in 1995 and 1997. SUNO remains the only Louisiana institution to win national championships in both the NCAA and NAIA. Dr. Davenport was also a four time NAIA National Coach of the Year.
