Today, on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Trinity College Dublin joins the international community in acknowledging the ongoing impact of FGM on women and girls, and in supporting efforts to bring about its prevention and eventual end. On this day, Trinity recognises the work of Ifrah Ahmed, LL.D, a Somali-Irish human rights advocate, educator, social entrepreneur, and honorary degree recipient. Ifrah has dedicated her life to supporting the global effort to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), a form of gender-based violence that she survived as a child. Recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of women and girls, FGM/C continues to affect more than 200 million women and girls worldwide.
