STILL STANDING, STILL PLAYING: The Untold Story of Kansas City Jazz
A couple of months ago, I was asked to create a story highlighting Black history for KCTV’s “We The People” segment. I chose 18th & Vine.
The more I researched this district—once the center of the American music world—the more I realized this isn’t just history. It’s a living, breathing institution with people still defending it, nurturing it, keeping the music alive.
This story pushed me to think differently as a photographer and editor — how to translate a vision in my head into a timeline and then into a final product.
I spent time with musicians, historians, and community leaders at the Mutual Musicians Foundation and the American Jazz Museum. And every single conversation reinforced the same truth: Culture isn’t something that happens to us. It’s something we actively choose to create and protect.
