TRASH PIT DIG UPDATE! From Archaeologist Chuck Meide: The Lighthouse Maritime Archaeology Program’s ongoing investigation excavation of the recently discovered trash pit at the Lighthouse continued this week. We got down so deep in our excavation unit that it was difficult to reach down while supported by a plank spanning the hole, since there was so much fragile material at the bottom that we couldn’t get an archaeologist down into the pit itself. We finally got to the bottom of the original trash pit at the end of the day on Wednesday, which was our fifteenth day of digging! We got to a depth of about 1.55 meters (over five feet) below the ground surface! This may have been an old privy that was filled with trash when it was no longer needed, perhaps around 1900-1910.
