Proof that age is never a barrier 👏⁠ ⁠ At just 16, Bohlale Mphahlele didn’t just talk about South Africa’s gender-based violence crisis, she did something about it.⁠ ⁠ Back in 2020, the Limpopo schoolgirl designed a wearable safety device called the “Alerting Earpiece”. Disguised as an ordinary earring, it allows the wearer to discreetly send an alert to trusted contacts, snap a photo of an alleged attacker and share their live location, all at the press of a hidden button.⁠ ⁠ Her invention earned national attention, a medal at a science expo and praise from education leaders. Fast forward to 2025 and Bohlale is still building.
