WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, is in Malawi this week for high-level discussions on strengthening weather forecasts and early warning systems. Malawi faces significant climate risks. Each year, floods affect around 100,000 people and droughts impact an estimated 1.5 million, with major consequences for infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods. Annual losses linked to extreme weather are estimated at USD 200 million, or 1.7 percent of the country’s GDP. During the visit, the Secretary-General met with Patricia Wiskes, Minister of Natural Resources of Malawi, alongside development partners, to discuss how stronger weather and climate services can support national priorities, including food security and economic resilience.
